In medical terms, white patches on the skin are known as vitiligo. This can appear on different body parts including the hands, feet, arms, legs, face, lips, and around the eyes and mouth.
Insufficient amounts of melanin in the body would lead to loss of healthy skin cells which can replace the dead cells that fall off. This in turn would lead to the formation of white patches in several areas on the body. Some of the other causes for Vitiligo include hyperthyroidism, hypertension, Vitamin B12 deficiency, auto-immune disorders, prolonged exposure to the sun and certain genetic traits etc.
